Capitol Reef National Park, which overlaps with Wayne County, was originally named “Wayne Wonderland.” That name was put to rest in 1937 when the area was declared a national monument, a step along the way to its national park status. The park was named after its whitish Navajo Sandstone cliffs with dome formations which create a “reef,” or a rocky barrier for land or sea travel.
