Carlsbad Caverns National Park is known for its extraordinary underground caves and caverns which contain helictites, stalactites, and stalagmites. Presently, there are 119 known caves in the park, one of which named “the Big Room” is the largest accessible cave chamber in North America. The caves now protected by the park were once valuable to settlers for the mining of bat guano, which is a useful fertilizer. In addition to its famous caves, the park has 50 miles of above ground trails along desert landscape.
