Indiana Dunes National Park runs about 20 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Over 100 years ago, a movement to preserve the dunes habitat intensified. By then, a particularly large dune, Hoosier Slide, had disappeared due to the use of the sand quality being ideal for glass manufacture by local businesses. Many years later, the dunes were protected as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and later a Indiana Dunes National Park.
