Petrified Forest National Park is named for its large collection of petrified wood, which occurs when a tree is replaced by stone through a mineralization process. Some of these natural artifacts were alive 225 million years ago. The park contains semi-desert shrub steppe with grassland prairies, and badlands with sedimentary rock and clay-rich soil that has experienced heavy erosion.
