White Sands National Park is named after the unique dunes the park protects. Unlike silica based sand popular among many beaches, the nearly white, fine material in the park is almost pure gypsum, which dissolves in water. While rainfall might collect and relocate the water soluble gypsum, there is no water outlet in the Tularosa Basin, so the sand remains within the basin.
